The Sport Bureau of Zhejiang Province has been earnestly implementing laws and regulations on sports and national policies related to sports work, with the aim of building Zhejiang into a modern province of high-level sports. Zhejiang Province has always been at the forefront of sports development nationwide. By the end of 2022, the per capita area of sports venues across the province reached 2.8 square meters, ranking sixth among provinces and regions; the number of individuals who regularly participate in physical exercise accounted for 43.4% of the total population, ranking second among provinces and regions; the national physical fitness standard compliance rate was 94.2%, ranking first among provinces and regions. Zhejiang Province took the lead in the construction of modernized sports counties (county-level cities, districts) and gymnasiums for the public. Zhejiang is one of the two provinces in China that have won at least one gold medal at all the Olympic Games since China resumed its participation in 1984. It has nurtured 17 Olympic champions and won 25 Olympic gold medals for China. Zhejiang has many shining records in large-scale national and international competitions, just to name a few: in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, Zhejiang athletes won 7 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals, determining Zhejiang’s top position on the gold medal tally among Chinese provinces (regions, municipalities) and marking the best performance of Zhejiang in Olympic Games. At the 2021 Shaanxi National Games, athletes from Zhejiang won 44 gold medals, 35 silver medals, and 37 bronze medals, ranking third on the gold medal tally. At the Hangzhou Asian Games, Zhejiang athletes won 51 gold, 21 silver, and 8 bronze medals, ranking first among all provinces (regions, cities) in terms of gold medals, creating the best record in Zhejiang's history of competing in the Asian Games. In 2021, the output of the sports industry of Zhejiang Province was 427.2 billion yuan, accounting for 13.7% of China’s total, generating an added value of 136.2 billion yuan, which accounted for 11% of China’s total, contributing 1.85% to the provincial GDP. As Zhejiang is the only pilot zone of social forces running sports and sports development through digital reform in China, the Sport Bureau of Zhejiang Province will leverage the institutional strengths and promote in-depth reform and innovation in key areas and key links of sports. Zhejiang also took the lead nationwide in implementing major sports reforms, such as building a provincial evaluation system for sports development index, putting in place a big data platform for public supervision over athletes technical class accreditation, and rolling out the mechanism of community-level sports promoters.
