On December 17, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced its latest world rankings. China’s National Badminton Team takes the first place in the men’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles programs.
Athlete Shi Yuqi’s points reached 103,015 points, securing the top spot in the men’s singles after winning the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals. Shi Yuqi wrapped up the 2024 season with the world No. 1 ranking after winning the year-end finals in a lapse of six years. Shi reached the BWF World Tour Finals six times this season, winning five titles and finishing 5,594 points ahead of second-place finisher Denmark’s Anders Antonsen. Another Chinese athlete, Li Shifeng, ranked seventh in the top 10.
Despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, Paris Olympics women’s doubles runners-up Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning retained the world No. 1 ranking in women’s doubles with 102,746 points, a slim margin of 530 points ahead of South Korean duo Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee, who won the title in the finals. The Paris Olympic women’s doubles champions Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan, who were also stopped in the quarterfinals, ranked fourth. The top ten also see two pairs of national women’s doubles combination Li Yijing and Luo Xumin, Zheng Yu and Zhang Shuxian, ranking the seventh and eighth, respectively.
In mixed doubles, the Chinese pairs took the top three places. Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping continued to rank first with 98,700 points, while Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin ranked second with 94,700 points. Zhejiang Olympic champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, who concluded their final chapter on the international stage after winning the finals, ranked third with 91,950 points. The “Ya Si” duo won four BWF World Tour titles in this season.
The biggest shake-up in the world rankings was in men’s doubles. After clinching victory in the tournament, the Danish pair Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen became the world No. 1 men’s doubles pair for the first time with 95,003 points. The “Liang Wang” combination of Liang Weikeng and Zhejiang athlete Wang Chang secured the second position with a difference of 1,985 points, which is also the highest ranking among Chinese pairs. Another Chinese pair Ren Xiangyu and He Jiting ranked seventh in the top 10.
In women’s singles, South Korea’s An Se-young continued to lead the rankings, while China’s Wang Zhiyi, who won her first finals, was second with 100,395 points. Zhejiang Olympic champion Chen Yufei, who was on vacation for adjustment, ranked fourth. Han Yue, the runner-up in the finals, was fifth.
