Female track and field athlete Xu Demei was born in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province in 1967. She was selected to Zhejiang provincial athletics team in 1982 and the national team in 1987.

In 1990, she won the silver medal in women’s javelin at the Beijing Asian Games.
