The year 1996 marked the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games. The 26th Summer Olympic Games held in Atlanta, United States from July 19 to August 4 was an occasion for the reunion of the Olympic family. This Games had 26 sports and 271 events with the participation of a total of 10,788 athletes from 197 countries and regions in the world. The athletes broke 25 world records after 17 days of fierce competitions. China sent a delegation of 495 members, including 309 athletes who participated in 22 sports and 153 events and won 16 gold medals, 22 silver medals, 12 bronze medals and renewed 4 world records.

A total of 18 athletes from Zhejiang Province were selected to the Chinese delegation and they won 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal, and secured the fifth place in four events and the eighth place in one event.
